How to Use Contests and Giveaways to Get More Traffic

Contests and giveaways are a great way to drive more people to your site. After all, everyone loves to get something for free, and even if you’re only offering up a $5 gift card to Starbucks, people will show up to your site for the chance to win it.

There are a number of things you can do to leverage the power of your contests and giveaways to get even more traffic for your site. Here are a few strategies you can use to get results:

Offer a Great Prize

The first thing you must do is offer a really great prize to get people excited. Sure, people will show up for a $5 Starbucks gift card, but an iPad will send traffic to your site in droves and have people climbing over each other to win. Offer the best prize that your budget can bear, and you will get much more traffic.

Choose the Right Duration

A contest has to be open long enough to allow people to learn about it and to create buzz. If the contest is too short, you will miss out on your chance to spread the word to more people. If the contest is too long, your readers will start to lose interest.

Though there is no hard and fast rule for how long is the right amount of time to run a contest, a good rule of thumb is to run it for about 2 to 3 weeks.

Give Plenty of Opportunities to Enter

Besides the traffic that your contest or giveaway can generate, it can also help you to build up more social media followers, links, and e-mail subscribers. The key is to offer your readers plenty of opportunities to enter. For example, readers can get one entry each time they like you on a social media network (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and more), each time they share your content on one of these networks, when they subscribe to your e-mail list, when they post a comment and more.

The more opportunities you provide, the more interaction you are likely to get.

Promote It

You may be giving away a million dollars, but if no one knows about it, you’ll never get traffic. OK, we admit, if you were giving away a million dollars, chances are the word would get out pretty quickly, no matter what else you did. For most other contests, the point still remains: You must promote your giveaway in order to drive traffic to it.

Share your contest on your social media, on your e-mail list, on relevant blogs and forums, and more. The more you promote it, the more traffic you are likely to get.

Contests and giveaways are a great way to promote your site and to drive more traffic (which will ultimately lead to more sales and conversions). However, you have to know how to leverage contests in order to get the most benefit from them. These strategies can help you get the most traffic from your contests and giveaways.
